Rewarding is Reinforcing

rewarding rewards reinforcement dog training pyrwild shaping success Sounds simple, right?Ā  I promise, it is. :)

We all have images in our minds about how we want our dog to be, how we want them to work with us, and so on.Ā  We wonder how can we achieve this ‘dream image’ of training and running with our dog.Ā  In agility and dog training, shaping is often used to develop behaviors, so why not use the same concept to shape the bigger picture, too?Ā  Shaping is a powerful tool.Ā  By using rewarding (read: reinforcing) one can ultimately shape their dog towards success.

Humans love to do things perfectly.Ā  Like, when our dog is doing amazing, they nail their contact, have a tight wrap, find and drive into a challenging weave entry and so on.Ā  We want to keep this ‘perfect chain’ going and finish the sequence successfully.Ā  The adrenal that comes with that along with the pure bliss of satisfaction.Ā  “We did it!!”Ā  It feels great in the moment, but moments pass and we may not see those glimmers when we run our dog next.Ā  What went wrong we wonder: My dog ran perfect last week.Ā  This is especially true for those with soft dogs or dogs who need a little extra encouragement.Ā  Too long without rewards will dim a softer dogs fire and and in contrast, will frustrate a higher drive dog.Ā  Neither of which is setting the dog up for success.Ā  A higher reward rate will only encourage a dog, build their excitement to work with their handler and want to show those amazing things they can do.Ā  So, encourage your dog to do their best and you’ll get more of that: their best.

Retrain your mind to see those ‘We Did It!!’ ah-ha’s as moments of skills, versus completing a chain of behaviors.Ā  A chain of behavior is a collection of skills in sequence. Ā By reinforcing the chain-links (skills) one is fundamentally strengthening the whole chain (sequence).

Training is just that- training.Ā  I don’t see the word perfection in there. šŸ™‚Ā  Build the little pieces.Ā  If you see a glimmer of your end goal, reward it. Sure, it feels amazing when we run together fabulously with our dogs in training, but save those perfect runs and uninterrupted sequences for competitions (or trial preparation).Ā  Use training to build onto all those glimmers of beauty and perfect skills- which are building blocks for future sequences.Ā  If your dog nails that contact deep and perfect blowing your mind immediately throw a party for them celebrating the brilliance they just showed you.Ā  Not only does this build the relationship and connection between handler and dog- it rewards the dog for that they just did.Ā  And, Rewarding Is Reinforcing. šŸ˜‰

Those baby steps will become great strides.Ā  Quality and consistency will add up.Ā  So, be mindful of the quality and consistency of rewarding you give your dog in training to reinforce future behaviors.Ā  Reinforcing the little bits will solidify those skills for the long-run.Ā  Think of rewarding as telling the dog ‘hey, I liked that thing you just did, you are awesome’.Ā  This becomes a communication between the dog and handler.Ā  So, when a team does run full courses in sequence they will see those incredible and connected moments of success because the dog understands what to give.

And of course, enjoy the journey. šŸ™‚Ā  The ‘Dream Team’ is in there.Ā  Reinforce the steps to get there and You will be Rewarded.

What Makes PYRWILD Training Great

My goal as a trainer is not to overwhelm students, throw a bunch of sequences or crazy skills at them but to work and fine-tune teams to be their best.Ā  I work with each student and their dog as the individual team they are at the level they are at or aspire to be.

I get to know each student and their dogs individually and truly want to help each and everyone of my students to achieve their goals.Ā  I understand that each dog learns differently and so does each human.Ā  My aim is to help each student be successful.

With a degree in philosophy, I have a very analytical mind and a natural eye for detail.Ā  I am proud to offer reward-based training, well-rounded skills & analytical feedback to my students.Ā  With an eye for detail, I am able to pinpoint little details and ultimately shape towards success.Ā  In my online course content includes simple, efficient videos and detailed write ups to go along with them.

PYRWILD students get:

  • Feedback & guidance in training
  • Detailed and analytical information
  • Judgement free help and support
  • Personable connection
  • The aid of years of experience and knowledge
  • Education for the Human, Training for the Dog

Student Testimonials

“I have worked w/ lots of trainers in the last 25 years & shall continue to to visit the ones I like, but I LOVE how youĀ breakĀ  it down incrementally; i.e. getting correctly from Point A to Point B & patiently teach how to do that.Ā  It is SO cool how many mistakes you can see just between say like 2 or 3 jumps ! I am not naturally an “incremental” “attention to detail” person & I believe it is the key to our success.”
“…turns around the problems we were having and enabled us to win the Rescue Agility Finals. Although we are in completely different time zones Jessica replies within hours and is always ready to explain and explain again to enable us to fully understand (which is not always easy online as I have found out with previous instructors).”
“In preparation for EOJ this year with both of my dogs I have been taking an online class from Jessica. I feel more confident and can feel the connection between my dogs and I while running. Scrat has improved so much under her training/ mentoring. She has also gotten Shadows confidence and speed up at 16″ with the drills she suggests.”
“Super nice training with fast feedback in our online class! She really helped ous with our problem.Ā We would go to a Class again”
“Jesi helped us to completely retrain our weaves during the summer break. The training plans were detailed but flexible and Jesi is very prompt with her feedback and is a lovely positive person to have on your team. Super happy with the improvements we have made. Highly recommend PyrWild!”
“A good teacher is hard to find; a nice teacher is also hard to find; and your words of wisdom with (my dog) are amazing.Ā  I would not think of any other teacher..”
“(My dog) and I are looking forward to learning more. Ā Youā€™re a fantastic instructor. Didnā€™t think Iā€™d ever compete with (my dog). It was more of just something to keep her occupied. But sheā€™s a fantastic dog. Iā€™m the one holding her back.”
